Made with a blend of ginger, molasses, and seasonal spices, they come in charming gingerbread man shapes, ready to add a touch of whimsy to your holiday celebrations.
125 g butter or brick margarine
125 ml (½ cup) brown sugar
1 egg
625 ml (2½ cups) plain flour
5 ml (1 teaspoon) bicarbonate of soda
15 ml (3 teaspoons) ground ginger
40 ml (2½ Tablespoons) Golden Syrup
ICING
125 ml (½ cup) Icing Sugar, mixed with a little boiling water to make a small quantity of glacé icing.
1Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy, add egg and beat well. Gradually add sifted dry ingredients and syrup, mix well, knead lightly. Divide dough into 6 portions, and roll each portion till 3mm thick.
2Cut out gingerbread figures with special cutters or cut around cardboard shapes with a sharp knife.
3Bake in a moderate oven (180ºC) for 10 minutes. Cool on trays.
4 Spoon icing into a small plastic bag, snip off one corner to make a piping bag. Pipe on features and clothing.
