Mahatma Gandhi Visit
Meiyang Chang’s Visit to Pietermaritzburg
Indian Idol contestant turned TV presenter Meiyang Chang was at the Pietermaritzburg Station yesterday to film an insert on Mahatma Gandhi.
Chang was filming the insert for the Sony Entertainment Television (SET) network programme Extraaa Innings T20, which airs before each Indian Premier League match.
Gandhi was thrown off a train at the station in 1893 because he was sitting in a “whites only” compartment.
Gandhi later went on to say that this incident was what led him to fight for human rights. Pietermaritzburg Station is part of the Freedom Route.
“Gandhi is significant to the people of India and programmes like this expose the rich heritage Pietermaritzburg has, even to those people who may never have had the opportunity to see it for themselves,” said Melanie Veness, director of Pietermaritzburg Tourism.
Veness said PMB Tourism is looking at expanding development at the station. “We hope to one day have a Gandhi museum at the station.”
In between filming Chang has been touring the country.
“I am very excited; getting to travel around South Africa has been a wonderful experience for me. I am definitely learning a lot,” said Chang.
